The basin, covering some 69,500 square mi (180,000 square km), is located to the north of the <a href=http://world-geography.org/mountain/664-tian-shan.html>Tian Shan Mountains</a> and has a mixed landscape that includes mountains, deserts, steppes, salt lakes and swamps.]]></description>
